Job Objectives

We are currently seeking applications from a suitability qualified Basic Grade Occupational Therapist to work in the newly developed low secure mental health service working alongside a Senior Occupational Therapist and a diverse multidisciplinary team. Candidates must demonstrate the necessary interest, capability, performance and enthusiasm in line with the requirements of this role.

This will include the following on a day-to-day basis:

Clinical

  • Manage a caseload, carrying out assessment, evidenced based intervention and evaluation of treatment programmes for individuals presenting with complex mental health difficulties residing in a low secure mental health unit. Occupational Therapy assessment and intervention is to be provided with consideration for self-care, productive and leisure occupations
  • Engage in interdisciplinary working with members of the clinical team including but not limited to Consultant Psychiatrists, Behaviour Specialists, Nurses, Clinical Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, Social Care Workers and Assistance Support Workers to meet the person-centred needs of individuals on your caseload
  • Develop and facilitate individual and group therapy programmes within the mental health unit based on the identified occupational performance difficulties of individuals.
  • Promote recovery-oriented occupational therapy practice in your interactions and work with individuals, staff and other key stakeholders.
  • Participate in promoting compliance with the Judgement Support Framework.
  • Contribute to individual care planning, risk assessment and risk management.
  • Complete detailed reports for internal/external stakeholders and ensure the quality of documentation of all assessments, treatment plans, progress notes and reports are in accordance with Nua Healthcare policy and professional standards.
  • Provide support to key stakeholders for carry over of Occupational Therapy recommendations.
  • Attend multidisciplinary team meetings, clinical department meetings and occupational therapy department meetings.
  • Direct and supervise Occupational Therapy students.
  • Attend and work the days and hours which s/he is assigned.
  • Demonstrate professional conduct and behaviour by adhering to legal, ethical and professional practice standards in all aspects of practice.
  • Maintain files and records on service users in accordance with the records policy.

Education and Training

  • Complete any mandatory trainings assigned through Nua Healthcare’s Learning Management System.
  • Attend internal/external conferences/ courses relevant to practice.
  • Participate in and follow up on actions set or learnings identified from clinical supervision and performance appraisals.

Quality Improvement 

  • Participate in annual Occupational Therapy Department Strategic Planning meetings and support the attainment of strategic goals.
  • Contribute to the sharing of knowledge and best practice both within the Occupational Therapy Department, the Low Secure Unit and wider Nua Healthcare Service.
  • Promote the Nua Healthcare Occupational Therapy Department at both a local and national level.
  • Present at conferences/courses relevant to practice and contribute to research.

Health & Safety

  • Promote a safe working environment in accordance with Health and Safety legislation.
  • Be aware of and implement agreed policies, procedures and safe professional practice by adhering to relevant legislation, regulations and standards.
  • Actively participate in risk management issues, identify risks and take responsibility for appropriate action.
  • Report any incidents/accidents/near misses in accordance with Nua Healthcare policies and procedures.
  • Have a knowledge of HIQA and Mental Health Commission Standards as they apply to the role for example.

Skills Requirement

Qualification:

  • Hold a Degree/ Masters in Occupational Therapy from a 3rd level institution offering a programme of study accredited by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.  
  • Be registered with CORU or show proof of pending registration at application stage. 

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the Judgement Support Framework and experience supporting compliance with same.
  • Experience working in mental health services.
  • Knowledge of individual care planning and experience contributing to individual risk assessment.

Experience:

  • Have at least two years relevant post qualification experience as an Occupational Therapist preferably in adult mental health services.
  • Experience in the implementation of sensory integration approaches with a recognised sensory integration course completed. 
  • Experience in developing and running therapeutic services and programmes including occupation based and psycho-educational groups.
  • Experience working with individuals with complex mental health presentations.
  • Evidence of a commitment to continuous professional development (CPD).
