We are seeking applications for the role of Consultant Psychiatrist to join the expanding Clinical Services team within Nua Healthcare Services. The successful candidate will provide senior clinical leadership and specialist psychiatric expertise in the delivery and development of high-quality, evidence-based mental health services for children and adults with complex needs, including intellectual disabilities, neurodevelopmental conditions, and mental health presentations.

The Consultant Psychiatrist will provide specialist psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, formulation, risk assessment and management, medication management, treatment planning, and ongoing clinical review. Working as a senior member of the multidisciplinary team, the post holder will collaborate with service users, families, carers, and clinical colleagues to ensure person-centred, recovery-focused, and outcome-driven care.

The role will also involve clinical governance, service development, clinical consultation, staff education, and contributing to the continuous improvement of psychiatric services across Nua Healthcare. The post holder will provide expert clinical input to complex cases and support the development of evidence-based practice, positive risk management, and high standards of clinical care.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide senior clinical leadership and consultant psychiatric expertise in the delivery of safe, high-quality services for individuals with complex mental health and intellectual disability needs.
• Take clinical responsibility for allocated patients, including psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, formulation, risk assessment and management, treatment planning, medication management and clinical review.
• Provide specialist psychiatric input to multidisciplinary assessments, care planning, risk reviews, clinical reviews and the development of therapeutic environments.
• Fulfil the role of Treating Consultant Psychiatrist where required, in accordance with the Mental Health Act 2001, Mental Health Amendment Act 2018, and all relevant legislation, regulations and professional standards.
• Provide expert psychiatric advice regarding complex presentations, including individuals who may present with significant risks to themselves or others.
• Provide clinical oversight of referral, admission and discharge processes, contributing to pre-admission assessments and ensuring appropriate clinical pathways.
• Work closely with the Clinical Director, Director of Nursing and multidisciplinary teams to maintain high standards of clinical care, governance, safety and service delivery.
• Contribute to clinical governance, service development, quality improvement, audit, research and evaluation initiatives across Nua Healthcare.
• Provide clinical supervision, consultation, teaching and professional support to medical and multidisciplinary colleagues, including junior medical staff where appropriate.
• Contribute to continuing medical education, professional development and the development of evidence-based clinical practice.
• Participate in appraisal, continuing professional development and relevant organisational and clinical meetings.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical policies, procedures, standards and service strategies.
• Work collaboratively with Consultant colleagues and senior management to ensure the effective functioning and ongoing development of services.
• Provide appropriate clinical cover for Consultant colleagues in accordance with agreed arrangements.
• Comply with all relevant health and safety, safeguarding, infection prevention and control, data protection/GDPR, security and organisational policies and procedures.

Essential Criteria

• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
• Specialist Registration with the Medical Council of Ireland, or eligibility for Specialist Registration.
• Significant post-specialist experience in Psychiatry, with experience in forensic psychiatry and/or secure mental health settings highly desirable.
• Demonstrable experience in the assessment and management of complex mental health presentations and clinical risk.
• Ability to fulfil the duties and responsibilities of a Consultant Psychiatrist under the Mental Health Act 2001 and relevant legislation.
• Strong clinical, communication and multidisciplinary working skills.
• Demonstrable ability to provide effective clinical leadership and make sound, evidence-based decisions in complex and uncertain situations.

Desirable Criteria

• Experience in mental health rehabilitation and/or intellectual disability services.
• Experience working across a range of psychiatric and clinical settings.
• Experience providing clinical leadership within a multidisciplinary team.
• Understanding of clinical governance, service development, audit, quality improvement and risk management.
• Experience in the supervision, teaching and professional development of medical and multidisciplinary staff.
• Higher qualification in medical education, clinical research, healthcare management or a related field.
• Additional relevant clinical qualifications or specialist expertise.
• Experience in clinical research, service evaluation and/or quality improvement.
• Evidence of involvement in audit or service improvement projects resulting in improved clinical outcomes or service delivery.
• Ability to effectively manage workload, prioritise clinical responsibilities and contribute to strategic service development.
• Commitment to continuing professional development, reflective practice and maintaining high standards of professional and clinical practice.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with service users, families, carers and professional colleagues.
